What You Can Do With Article Galaxy MCP

Once connected, your AI agents can access your library, check rights, and acquire new articles inside the tools your team already uses.

What your AI can now do:

  • Search peer-reviewed scientific literature
  • Check your organization's existing access rights and entitlements
  • Verify AI and TDM usage rights before content enters a model
  • Place document delivery, rental, and GenAI rights orders
  • Download licensed full-text content with pre-signed secure links

If your team already uses Article Galaxy, your existing library becomes immediately accessible inside your AI environment.

Setup

ℹ️ An Article Galaxy account is required for MCP access. Request a demo.

Select the platform you want to connect and follow the steps below.

ChatGPT

Step 1: Configure

In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Connected Apps > Add App and enter the following MCP server URL:

https://mcp.articlegalaxy.com/ag/mcp

Requires a paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, or Team).

Step 2: Authenticate

Step 3: Use It

Type @ArticleGalaxy in your prompt to activate the connector. For best performance, reconnect before each session by clicking the ··· menu next to Article Galaxy and selecting Reconnect.

Example: @ArticleGalaxy check if I have access to DOI 10.1038/s41586-020-2012-7

Troubleshooting

If Article Galaxy is not responding, ChatGPT may have silently disconnected the tool between sessions. Click the ··· menu next to Article Galaxy and select Reconnect to restore the connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Article Galaxy MCP?

A secure, authenticated bridge that lets AI assistants (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, and others) check article availability (e.g. whether the article is Open Access or if the user has access via a publisher subscription), verify re-use rights, and — with the same authorization a human user would need — purchase articles from Article Galaxy, all from inside the AI tool. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI tools to trusted external services. Think of it as the Article Galaxy order desk made reachable from inside an AI conversation — the rules of the order desk don't change.

Who can use the Article Galaxy MCP?

Only authenticated Article Galaxy subscribers whose accounts have MCP access enabled. Each user authenticates individually with their own credentials — never shared with the AI client — ordering actions require explicit user authorization, access is scoped to the user's subscription, and all activity is logged.

Can teams use the MCP?

Yes. Each team member connects individually using their own Article Galaxy credentials. There is no organization-level configuration required.

What can I do through the MCP?

You can search for articles, check access rights and pricing, place orders for full-text PDFs or GenAI rights, check order status, and access articles already in your PDF library.

How does pricing work for articles ordered through the MCP?

Pricing is the same as ordering through Article Galaxy directly. Your AI tool will show you access options and costs before placing any order, and will always ask for your confirmation before purchasing.

Does Article Galaxy run an AI model on our content?

No. Article Galaxy runs no AI model as part of the MCP. All language generation happens in the researcher's own AI tool; Article Galaxy's role is limited to returning structured data — availability, pricing, rights status, citation metadata — and fulfilling authorized orders. Article Galaxy does not see, store, or process the researcher's prompts, performs no AI model training of any kind, and publisher content is never used to train AI models — by Article Galaxy or by anyone through Article Galaxy.

Doesn't connecting AI tools mean AI companies can harvest our content through you?

No — and this is the most common misunderstanding. The MCP grants no bulk access, no crawling, and no corpus export. Every retrieval is one authenticated individual requesting one specific article, subject to that individual's entitlements and usage quota, with every request logged for audit. MCP access itself is an account-level grant that is off by default and enforced server-side. An AI tool connected to the Article Galaxy MCP can do exactly what its human user could do in Article Galaxy directly — nothing more.

If someone buys an article, can their AI tool then summarize or analyze it?

Only with an additional AI/TDM Rights grant. A standard purchase authorizes individual use, exactly as it always has — it does not separately authorize feeding the article into an AI model. AI analysis requires a distinct per-article AI/TDM Rights purchase — available alongside the PDF or on its own — and only for publishers participating in Article Galaxy's AI/TDM Rights program. Where a publisher has not joined the program, no AI-use option is offered at all; the standard purchase path is unaffected. Articles published open access under CC-BY are the one exception: their license already permits this use. However the Article Galaxy MCP is NOT delivering PDFs to the LLM or through the AI in any capacity.
