Our task is to engage with it thoughtfully, to shape how these tools get integrated into academic life in ways that honor our values while expanding what's possible in research and teaching.

That means moving beyond the detection mindset and thinking about enablement instead. It means equipping researchers with tools that make it easier, not harder, to maintain standards of rigor and reliability. It means building systems that support verification, encourage critical thinking, and help faculty and students navigate an increasingly complex information environment.

Instead of centering the conversation on what we oppose (plagiarism, academic dishonesty, sloppy research), we should emphasize what we champion: rigorous inquiry, reproducible findings, and research that builds meaningfully on what came before. The infrastructure we build now will determine whether AI becomes a tool that elevates academic research or one that undermines it.

How we respond to these challenges today will define the standards of academic research and education for years to come. We have a real opportunity to get this right. Doing so will require meaningful investment: policies and training, yes, but also the foundational capabilities that enable researchers to work efficiently and with integrity.
