Do You Need A Cost Estimate?

Posted in Research Solutions on October 28th, 2010 by Matthew

We know that most of our clients work within a firm budget, and the fact that copyright fees vary so widely is an uneasy issue that’s hard to tackle. Depending on the copyright fee associated with a book or journal, the price can range anywhere from $10 to hundreds of dollars. As you most likely know, we ask our clients to set a copyright fee cap. That is, we ask them to set a maximum amount they’re willing to spend before we contact them for approval. While this works well most of the time, there are instances when a proper estimate is needed. Whatever the reason is, simply let us know that you’d like an estimate on the group of documents when you send in the requests, and we’ll send you one with the total cost. From there, you let us know when you’re ready to proceed with the order. We can also create an estimate for your custom projects, including those dealing with dictionary terms, microfilm/microfiche, citation/author searches and date stamps. If you’re wondering whether or not we can retrieve the type of document you’re looking for, just give us a call and ask!

The Vending Machine Library

Posted in Of Interest on October 28th, 2010 by Matthew

It’s clear that convenience is a factor in how people use their local library. Some libraries are taking a cue from the movie industry, installing their own vending-machine-style dispensers in convenient locations. Like the Redbox movie machines they’re modeled after, these dispensers house bestsellers, DVDs and mostly popular items. However, instead of grocery stores, you’ll find them in high-traffic areas, such as airports, subway stations and the like. To access the machines, patrons use their library card and select what they want. When they’re done, they can either return it back to the machine or any library building. It’s a creative way to bring the library’s collection to the masses, and since many of the machines store more than a hundred items, there should be no trouble serving the masses.

Ebooks: More Info to More People

Posted in Of Interest on October 28th, 2010 by Matthew

Slowly, but surely, ebooks are becoming the preferred medium over print editions of books. In fact, Amazon recently noted that ebook sales surpassed those of traditional books. Libraries the  world over have embraced ebooks to help boost the public’s use of libraries. The ease at which they can be loaned and delivered via the internet offers a solution to those who are incapable or are too busy to visit during the library’s hours. Publishers, however, are concerned about non-secure transmissions between the library and the patron, and that it will interfere with the publisher’s commercial interests. Due to this, thy are threatening to stop allowing remote access to the ebooks. Instead, the patron will have to visit the library, just as they do for print editions. This, of course, defeats what some librarians view as the purpose of remote access. What do you think?

A Brief History of Research Solutions

Posted in Just For Fun, Research Solutions on October 22nd, 2010 by Matthew

For nearly a decade, Research Solutions has been delivering documents to clients around the world. It all started in the spring of 2002, when Shane, Chris, Ryan and Richard decided to start a document delivery service. Each had dealt with similar services and inter-library loan during their academic careers, and knew there was an opportunity to provide a better service than what was available. They wanted to create one that would not only retrieve the documents their clients needed, but would do so with great customer service. Research Solutions was born through putting the client’s needs first, providing a single price point for the service, and being available by phone and email.

The Founders

L to R: Ryan Coyle, Shane Hunt, Richard Coyle, Chris Atwood

They scraped together enough money to rent a cramped one-room office and pay for the internet, and started figuring out how to find clients. At first, they worked day-jobs while doing the leg-work of starting a business in the evenings. The long hours paid off when they received their first order: four articles about French armor. An amateur historian needed the articles for his studies and came across the company in his search. His hand-typed thank-you still hangs on an office wall.

The company has seen many changes over the years, some of the biggest in 2009. Ryan left to embrace his true passion: cars. He started a company called Road Royalty, which brings together people interested in car culture. Later that year, Richard decided to retire from Research Solutions to focus on writing, family and, of course, golf. Although they were fundamental, the business continues to grow every day. Access to new library collections, a new office and new members to the Research Solutions’ team are just a few recent highlights. As Research Solutions continues to move forward, the original vision of great customer service remains the focus that drives the company.

E-books: The Battle Rages

Posted in Of Interest on August 4th, 2010 by Matthew

Over the last couple years, there’s been an increase in the number of people using e-book readers, like the Kindle or the Nook, to consume the information once exclusively held in books and newspapers. In fact, Amazon recently announced that e-book sales have overtaken those of more traditional media. This fact can be viewed as good or bad depending on your stance, and throwing copyright issues into the mix makes it even more of a sticky situation.

NPR recently did a story on how Amazon and Wylie are handling this issue. Click here to read the story. What do you think about this issue?

Our New Digs

Posted in Company News on July 27th, 2010 by Matthew

For the fourth time since the company began back in 2002, Research Solutions has moved into a new office. You may be thinking, “So what? It’s probably just another faceless office with no character.” Well, my friend, you are wrong.

This time around, we moved into a Chico business park called Philadelphia Square.

The interesting thing about this business park is that all of the buildings, about thirty of them, are modeled after historic buildings in Philadelphia. For instance, there’s Betsy Ross’ House, the Federal building and the Capitol Building.

We’re in the Franklin Library.

The sign out front says it serve as the first Library of Congress, which, considering the nature of our business, is interesting.

At the very least, this place definitely provides a more interesting lunchtime stroll!

AALL in the Mile-High City

Posted in Conferences on July 21st, 2010 by Matthew

Last week, we exhibited at the AALL conference in Denver. This was our third year attending the conference, and each year we’ve had a great time. Much of the fun is meeting the people that come by our booth and learning about what they do. It’s a great way to keep up with the pulse of the industry.

As exhibitors, we bring pens, letter openers and buttons to give away, and people seem to love it. The buttons have sayings on them that are geared towards librarians, and it’s great when they bring a big smile and laugh from folks who are just stopping by. We also take names for a daily drawing, and the response is always the same. “Oh, sure… why not. It doesn’t matter since I never win anything anyways.” Well, here’s proof that someone wins!

  • Jennifer Berman, McDermott Will & Emery LLP
  • Kate Martin, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP
  • Ann Morris, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP

These three won a $100 giftcard to the choice of Barnes & Noble, Starbucks or Amazon. If you’d like a chance to win next year, keep an eye out for the blue and orange booth at the next show!
