Research Solutions moved into their new office this month.

For the fourth time since the company began back in 2002, Research Solutions has moved into a new office. You may be thinking, “So what? It’s probably just another faceless office with no character.” Well, my friend, you are wrong.

This time around, we moved into a Chico business park called Philadelphia Square.

The interesting thing about this business park is that all of the buildings, about thirty of them, are modeled after historic buildings in Philadelphia. For instance, there’s Betsy Ross’ House, the Federal building and the Capitol Building.

We’re in the Franklin Library.

The sign out front says it serve as the first Library of Congress, which, considering the nature of our business, is interesting.

At the very least, this place definitely provides a more interesting lunchtime stroll!

Last week, we exhibited at the AALL conference in Denver. This was our third year attending the conference, and each year we’ve had a great time. Much of the fun is meeting the people that come by our booth and learning about what they do. It’s a great way to keep up with the pulse of the industry.

As exhibitors, we bring pens, letter openers and buttons to give away, and people seem to love it. The buttons have sayings on them that are geared towards librarians, and it’s great when they bring a big smile and laugh from folks who are just stopping by. We also take names for a daily drawing, and the response is always the same. “Oh, sure… why not. It doesn’t matter since I never win anything anyways.” Well, here’s proof that someone wins!

Jennifer Berman, McDermott Will & Emery LLP

Kate Martin, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP

Ann Morris, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP

These three won a $100 giftcard to the choice of Barnes & Noble, Starbucks or Amazon. If you’d like a chance to win next year, keep an eye out for the blue and orange booth at the next show!

In just a few days from now, we’ll be flying into New Orleans for the SLA 2010 Annual Conference. This will be Research Solutions’ third year exhibiting at the event, and if it’s anything like the last two, it’ll be a great time! It’s a chance for us to meet some of our clients, talk to folks who haven’t heard about us and, overall, to enjoy the librarian community. Also, exploring New Orleans won’t be so bad!

We’ll be at the INFO-EXPO, which typically is a large conference center hall dedicated to the exhibiting vendors. It’s a place for attendees to walk around in between sessions, and learn about products and services that are offered. If you’ll be in New Orleans anytime between June 13 and June 16, and would like a free day-pass to visit the INFO-EXPO, click here. Let them know Research Solutions sent you!

If you’ve come by our booth at any conference in the last couple years, you’ve most likely walked away with a few of our buttons. These buttons have been a surprise hit, and this year, we’d like to bring some new ones with us to the conferences. In order to do so, though, we need your help! First, look below to see what we’ve already used in the past. Then, send me an email when an idea hits you. What we’re looking for is witty and funny, with some idea of a visual to go along with it. Now, we’ve received some ideas in the past that… well, they would be inappropriate to use. If we end up using your idea, though, we’ll thank you with a gift-card of your choice… and a few of those buttons!

Our conference season starts a little early this year as we sponsor a joint dinner meeting between the San Francisco and San Andreas chapters of the SLA. The topic of the evening is how to offer mobile services to library users, with a presentation by the Librarian in Black, Sarah Houghton-Jan. Ms. Houghton-Jan is the Digital Futures Manager for the San Jose Public Library, and was successful in helping her library become one of the first to use downloadable mobile applications.
Research Solutions will be exhibiting at the 2010 SLA conference, June 13-15, in New Orleans.

“Hey Bob, you going to the SLA conference this summer?”

“Well, yeah, I was thinking about it. You know, it’s in New Orleans this year, and I’ve been wanting to get down there for a while. What about your?”

“I’m heading down there with a couple other librarians from the office. It’s gonna be a jambalaya of a good time!”

“Ha! Yeah, I heard about it through the document delivery company we use at work, Research Solutions. I guess they’ll have a booth set-up in the vendor area.”

“Oh yeah, I’ve been using Research Solutions for years now! I met them at the conference in ‘08… up in Seattle. They’re great! In fact, they have a comp pass on their website for people to get into the INFO-EXPO, which is the vendor exhibit area. You’ll still have to pay for admission, though, if you’d like to attend the various talks.”

“Hmm… ssounds like something I’ll have to check out. I wouldn’t mind meeting up with a couple people and checking out a few vendors, so maybe I’ll just drive down for a couple days and make a trip out of it. Thanks for the tip!”

“No prob, Bob. They don’t call us ‘Information Professionals’ for nothing!”

That’s right, we’ve secured our spot on the INFO-EXPO floor of this year’s SLA conference, June 13th through the 15th. Come visit us at booth 1632 and help us put a face to the names we see every day. We’ll also be holding a drawing to give away gift-cards to a few lucky attendees.

Will you, like Bob, be in the area but would just like to visit the INFO-EXPO? No problem, we can help you with that! Simply click here for a free pass, and we’ll see you in the Big Easy!

The National Library of the Netherlands has digitized man old and rare book-bindings from their collection.

It’s safe to say that books have helped to shape mankind. Throughout time, books have held the philosophies of life, the history of nations and the stories of people. They’ve helped to spread ideas across the globe and educate the masses. But what about that integral part of the book, the binding that houses the pages of words we hold so dear? Is there room in the appreciation of books for the art of book-binding?

The answer is a resounding yes, based upon the recent digitization of roughly 1000 bindings by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, or the National Library of the Netherlands. This online collection presents an overview of book-binding history from the 12th century through present-day. It’s eye-opening to see the art and level of craftsmanship that went into hand-making each book. In today’s world of the internet, the iPad and the Kindle, these book-bindings are a reminder that information hasn’t always been accessible and was held in very high regard.

NOCALL will be celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this weekend at the 2010 Spring Institute, and Research Solutions will be there. We’ll be exhibiting during the breaks amid the substantive programming members will enjoy. Given that the topic of conversation will include piracy and copyright infringement, we invite you to stop by our booth to learn how these issues relate to commercial document delivery. We’ll be able to answer your questions on a case by case basis and enrich your understanding of this timely issue. Also, in addition to giving away gift cards to Starbucks and Barnes & Noble, you’ll be able to plunder and pillage our loot. We have plenty of pens for you to stock up for the next few months and a sufficient supply of letter openers.

Visit the NOCALL website for more info on the Spring Institute and to check out the scedule.

Hope to see you there!
