We were in Washington, DC, last month for the annual conference of the Special Libraries Association. While Richard and Shane had both been to DC before, it was my first time there. In fact, it was my first time on the East Coast. I’ve explored up and down the West Coast, but haven’t ventured much further than Utah in my travels. Since we happened upon great weather, I still don’t understand the whole East Coast muggy weather thing, but we’ll be back at the end of July. I’m sure then we’ll have the pleasure of being surrounded by the thick summer air… at least, that’s what I hear.

<img title="Meeting up with Obama" src="http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq114/researchsolutions/MattRichardObama.jpg" alt="Richard and I had to pull some strings, but luckily we were able to get a few minutes with the President.
<img class=" " title="Seinfelds Puffy Shirt" src="http://i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq114/researchsolutions/Seinfeld-ThePuffyShirt.jpg" alt="Remember that episode of Seinfeld with the puffy-shirt? Well, we do and laughed out loud when we saw it at the Smithsonian.

Like I said, we’ll be back in DC at the end of July for the annual AALL conference. If you’ll be in the area and would like to attend the exhibit hall, click here for a free pass. We’ll be exhibiting at booth 735, so stop by and say hi if you’ll be there.

You can rest assured that if you attend a tradeshow or conference, you will walk away with a bag full of swag. These chotchkies are the vendors’ attempt at capturing your attention in the brief moment they have you before them. Pens, stuffed animals and calendars are standard fare, but most of these trinkets and the people who gave them away are forgotten once the show is over.

We’d like to think that we’re different, though. Not only did we have buttons that spoke to the hearts and minds of the librarians attending SLA 2009, we gave them four chances to win something they could actually use… money! Well, money in the form of $100 gift-cards to their choice of Barnes & Nobles, Starbucks or Amazon.com. So, without further ado, the winners are:

Andrea Oliver: Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Susan Golden: Spiegel and McDiarmid LLP

Nelly Silva: Merck and Co., Inc.

Patricia Alpine: J.R. Simplot Company

Thank you to everyone that came by our booth and helped to make the conference such an enjoyable experience for us. We’ll be back in DC at the end of July for the AALL conference with more buttons and more chances to win. See you there!

It’s been 100 years since the Special Libraries Association’sfirst meeting was held in Bretton Woods, NH, and we’ll be celebrating with the community of information professionals at this year’s annual conference in Washington, DC. Last year was our first time at the conference as exhibitors in the Info/Expo, the main exhibit hall where vendors showcase their products and services. We had a great time meeting many of the individuals who make up the information industry, including other vendors, publishers and many of our clients. For the attendees, not only is it a great place to network and make contacts, it’s a great place to pick up some free swag! Last year, we brought pins with sayings on them, such as “This is my librarian costume” and “Libraries: the original search engine”. They were such a hit, that we will be bringing them with us again, with a couple additions. If you’re going to the SLA conference this year (and you should!), make sure to stop by and meet us at booth #537. If you can’t remember our booth number, just keep an eye out for three guys with big smiles and bright orange shirts. For a free pass into the Info/Expo, click here.
