If you’ve used our service in the past, then you’ve received an email from us with an update on your order. Typically, this email lets you know that we’ve received your requests and we’re working on them. Sometimes, these update emails may show some of the requests in your order “Completed”, while others are “Canceled” or “Can’t-Filled”. The statuses “Completed” and “Can’t-Filled” are self-explanatory, but “Canceled” seems a bit vague. You may be thinking, “Who canceled the order?” or “Why was it canceled?”
An item is “Canceled” when the request exceeds the maximum cost set by the client, if there’s a delay in obtaining the item or if the citation is incomplete. In an effort to communicate these issues more effectively, we’ve added the status “Pending Client Approval”, which you’ll begin to see in place of “Canceled”.
Our clients will begin seeing this on their order update emails immediately, when applicable. If it shows up on your email, simply review the reason for the alert and respond, letting us know if you’d like to proceed with the request.
If you use DocTrac to manage your orders, you’ll also see a new button on your homepage that will allow you to show those requests that are “Pending Client Approval”. Please review these requests and let us know if you’d like us to proceed.
After thirty days, a “Pending Client Approval” request becomes “Canceled”. However, it is not removed from our system, and the request can be approved at any time.

When you have a large number of requests you’d like us to retrieve, we also like to make sure you don’t spend your time entering each citation on our order form. Send us the citation you need in the body of an email or attached to it, and we’ll handle the data entry for no additional charge! We believe it’s the little things that help us stand apart from the competition, and hope you agree. Give us a call if you’d like to learn more about the little things we offer!

The vast amount of resources found on the internet makes the search for information easy and accessible to anyone with the ability to connect. School children can accomplish the majority of research for school papers without leaving their home. Barroom quibbles can quickly be put to an end by verifying information on one’s phone. Researchers, librarians and other information professionals, however, may need to dig much deeper than these basic internet resources allow, and thus have databases and library collections to fulfill this need.
When an info pro is unable to obtain the document they need, whether due to time constraints, an overload of requests or the simple inability to locate it, a document delivery service may be called upon to aid in the search. Research Solutions is such a service. The following points will present some benefits of using our document delivery service.
More timely than interlibrary loan:
When a book or journal is held at a library other than the one that you frequently use, the desired publication may be lent to your library through what’s known as interlibrary loan, or ILL. While ILL is useful for increasing access for a library’s patrons, oftentimes a week will pass before the publication is received. While this time frame may be acceptable for some, others may need the information they require much sooner. In this instance, Research Solutions’ service could be called upon to retrieve the documents within 24- or 48-hours. In addition to a much faster turnaround, the documents will be delivered to the email address provided to Research Solutions, bypassing the need to pick up your requested publication at the library.
Not limited to a single subject:
It’s safe to say that a large percentage of the document requests Research Solutions receives are for scientific, technical or medical journal articles. The far-reaching network of library collections that we access allows us to fill more than ninety percent of those requests. However, this network also allows us to retrieve documents that other services may have trouble locating, including conference proceedings, newspaper and magazine articles, Physician’s Desk Reference and dictionary terms, and many others.
Pay-per-use:
Since there is no subscription associated with Research Solutions’ service, you can use us as often and only when you need us. Some of our clients request hundreds of documents per month, while others just a few per year. Orders can be placed through our online order form or can be sent to orders@researchsolutions.com, allowing you to choose the method that works best for you. You’ll never see an invoice for a document that we’re unable to deliver to you.
We’ll do the legwork:
All we require to retrieve a document is a citation. It doesn’t have to be complete. Send us as much of the citation information that you have, and we’ll fill in the blanks. We do not add any fees for submitting an incomplete or faulty citation. There’s no need to do any preliminary searching for the document. We’ll look through our vast network of library collections to find out where the publication is held, and send our on-site retriever to copy the document you need.
Clean copies:
We clean all documents after we receive the copy from our on-site retriever. Our trained delivery team ensures that the text and images are completely readable and ready for the client. Once deemed suitable, the document is converted to a PDF and delivered.
Copyright compliant:
You can rest assured that each document you receive from Research Solutions will be compliant with current copyright law. We make sure that everything we deliver has been cleared through the Copyright Clearance Center, and simply add this fee to our service change with no markup.
As you can see, Research Solutions offers a comprehensive document delivery service capable of handling a wide variety of needs. Whether you’re short on time, overloaded with requests or just need help, Research Solutions your best bet. Please contact us to learn more about how we can help you.

This doesn't happen very often!
In case you didn’t hear, the Earth recently finished yet another orbit around the large, glowing orb in the sky. We hope you spent this miraculous event, and the preceding holiday season, in good spirits with friends and family.
We’re based in Northern California, and just to confirm that this winter has been abnormally cold, we actually saw a bit of snow in the very early morning of New Year’s Day. Although it didn’t leave more than a thin layer of white dust that quickly melted away, for those of us celebrating the night away, it was a magical moment.
We’re looking forward to another great year for 2011, and hope you are as well. Call Research Solutions for all your document delivery needs throughout the year!

No Comments »We know that most of our clients work within a firm budget, and the fact that copyright fees vary so widely is an uneasy issue that’s hard to tackle. Depending on the copyright fee associated with a book or journal, the price can range anywhere from $10 to hundreds of dollars. As you most likely know, we ask our clients to set a copyright fee cap. That is, we ask them to set a maximum amount they’re willing to spend before we contact them for approval. While this works well most of the time, there are instances when a proper estimate is needed. Whatever the reason is, simply let us know that you’d like an estimate on the group of documents when you send in the requests, and we’ll send you one with the total cost. From there, you let us know when you’re ready to proceed with the order. We can also create an estimate for your custom projects, including those dealing with dictionary terms, microfilm/microfiche, citation/author searches and date stamps. If you’re wondering whether or not we can retrieve the type of document you’re looking for, just give us a call and ask!

It all started in the spring of 2002, when Shane, Chris, Ryan and Richard decided to start a document delivery service. Each had dealt with similar services and inter-library loan during their academic careers, and knew there was an opportunity to provide a better service than what was available. They wanted to create one that would not only retrieve the documents their clients needed, but would do so with great customer service. Research Solutions was born through putting the client’s needs first, providing a single price point for the service, and being available by phone and email.

L to R: Ryan Coyle, Shane Hunt, Richard Coyle, Chris Atwood
They scraped together enough money to rent a cramped one-room office and pay for the internet, and started figuring out how to find clients. At first, they worked day-jobs while doing the leg-work of starting a business in the evenings. The long hours paid off when they received their first order: four articles about French armor. An amateur historian needed the articles for his studies and came across the company in his search. His hand-typed thank-you still hangs on an office wall.
The company has seen many changes over the years, some of the biggest in 2009. Ryan left to embrace his true passion: cars. He started a company called Road Royalty, which brings together people interested in car culture. Later that year, Richard decided to retire from Research Solutions to focus on writing, family and, of course, golf. Although they were fundamental, the business continues to grow every day. Access to new library collections, a new office and new members to the Research Solutions’ team are just a few recent highlights. As Research Solutions continues to move forward, the original vision of great customer service remains the focus that drives the company.
